Coffee plays a crucial role in Burundi: it does not only provide income to more than 650,000 families; it is also the main industry and export product of the country. In the mid-2000s, after the civil war, the Burundi government saw the potential of coffee in recovering the devastated economy. Coffee was introduced in Burundi in the 1920s, under Belgian colonial rules. With mountainous land and a tropical climate, the country offers good conditions to cultivate coffee trees. To ensure the supply of the increasing European demand, the government imposed farmers in 1933 to cultivate at least 50 trees of coffee, buying their crop at a very low price. After its independence in 1962, Burundi went through much turmoil, and the coffee industry went through privatisation and nationalisation phases, which did not have positive impacts on the whole production.

Since then, a lot has happened, and Burundi has made a name for itself and gained recognition for producing exceptional coffees with unique flavours and profiles in the specialty coffee world in recent years. The coffee industry is organised around washing stations—cooperatives or privately owned—spread around the country. Those washing stations led the move to specialty coffee by investing in their processing infrastructure, improving the quality of the cherries they buy, and keeping their lots separate to improve traceability. Matsitsi Trading Coffee is one of those organisations that leads the way for others to follow. The company was founded in 2015 by Matsitsi Zuberi with the objective of promoting and producing specialty coffee for the benefit of producers. Matsitsi grew up in coffee fields and inherited the passion for coffee from his family. The same passion he now transfers to his employees and the farmers he works with. Matsitsi now owns three washing stations, two of them in the Kayanza province and one in the Muyinga province. This lot is a blend consisting of Bourbon variety coffee from various producers delivered to the Businde washing station. Through his investments, he has undertaken numerous social, environmental, and economic projects for the community. For example, free organic compost distribution, the installation of wastewater treatment pits, the financing of female farmer
associations, health insurance cards, and the payment of school fees.
