Natural Yirgacheffe Grade 1 Foge comes from smallholder farmers in the villages of Foge and Hafursa waro in Abaya district of Guji zone, which borders the Gedio Zone of Yirgacheffe. This coffee is exported as Yirgachefe in accordance with the Ethiopian Commodities Exchange (ECX) classification system because the coffee has a Yirgacheffe flavor than Guji.
This coffee was produced by Fikadu Abayneh; the owner of Kanketi Coffee export. Fikadu’s father started the coffee business 30 years ago. Being born and raised in Yirgacheffe, gave Fikadu a chance to explore details in coffee and to improve the family business as well.
Foge is a name of small village where our wet/dry mill that we call Foge found. The mill was established 10 years ago. This mill serves 418 smallholder farmers which collectively owns 373.8 hectares coffee farm from the villages of Foge and Hafursa waro. We buy freshly harvested red coffee cherries that are handpicked from 418 out growers for processing.
The selected red cherries will be put on natural drying raised beds usually for 21 days or more depending on the temperature. After the coffee finalized it drying on the natural sun, it will go through under huller for removal of the outer cover or cascara in the site.
After transported to Addis Ababa warehouse the parchment coffees go through under huller, sieve and color sorter for the final cleaning. After pre shipment samples are approved by Coffee quality & inspection center of Ethiopia, The coffee will be staffed in a container which all six walls are lined with craft paper and go to Djibouti port with the preferred vessel.
