Farm or Region History / Background
Kaguyu washing station is located on the foothill of Mount Kenya, just outside of the town Kerugoya. This western part of Kirinyaga is bordering to Nyeri and has some of the most fertile soils in the country.
Farm / Estate Processing Techniques
Once the cherries have been delivered to the washing station, the have to be handsorted and the underripes, insect damaged and other defective cherries have to be removed. The cherries are then
pulped and the parchment is fermented overnight. Once the fermentation is completed, the parchment is washed and separated into P1, P2, P3 and P light. It is then dried between 10 and 20 days.
Environmental/ Sustainability/Social/Community/Development
The farmers from this cooperative are taking the pulp of the cherries back home and mixing them with cow manure. It is then used as fertilizer in the farms.
