Farm or Region History/Background
Kabare FCS is located in the central area of Kirinyaga, between the counties of Nyeri and Kirinyaga. The different factories are all located on the slopes of the mount Kenya, the second highest mountain on the African continent. The farmers of the Kabare FCS are mostly cultivating the traditional SL28 and SL34 varieties.
Farm / Estate Processing Techniques
The cherries are being handsorted before pulping. The parchment is then fermented overnight in tanks in order to break the sugars of the pulp. After fermentation, the parchment is then washed and graded into P1, P2, P3 and P lights. The last stage is the drying of the coffee on raised beds, which takes between 9 and 15 days.
Environmental/ Sustainability, Social/Community Development
The Kabare FCS has put a system in place where the factory managers are changing factories every few seasons. This enables them to exchange knowledge and keep consistent quality between the different factories.
