Origin: Tambaya Factory – Rumukia Farmers’ Cooperative Society
Tambaya is one of the washing stations of the Rumukia cooperative. It is located in the Mukurwe-ini area in Nyeri County. The washing station is named after the indigenous tree called Mutambaya. Most of the farmers in this area are cultivating the SL28 variety. There are 600 farmers delivering cherries to this factory. These coffees have been produced at 1600 – 1800 masl.
Harvest:
The farmers grow SL 28, SL 34, Batian varieties on clay loam soil. Flowering occurs during February – March and coffee is harvested October – December. The average annual rainfall is 1400mm, and the temperature is 20.5 °C.
Processing:
The cherries are sorted before being pulped. The parchment is then fermented overnight, before being washed and graded into P1, P2, P3, P lights and pods. After that, it is dried on the drying tables for 8-14 days.
Impact:
After the cherries are delivered to the washing station, most of the farmers collect the pulp and bring it back to the farm. It is then mixed with cow manure and used as fertilizer for the coffee trees.
