Luis Orlando Julon Olano owns “El Pate” farm, located in the caserío La Palma, Jaén district, Cajamarca region, at an altitude of 1950 masl. The 6-hectare plot was donated by his parents, with 3 hectares dedicated to coffee (2 in production and 1 growing). He started coffee farming 10 years ago, following his family’s tradition. The varieties grown are Caturra, Pache, and Catimor, under 10% shade. Fertilisation is 50% organic, 50% chemical, with selective pruning and old-plant renewal. Coffee processing includes a 48-hour cherry rest, 12-hour fermentation, washing, and drying for 10 days under shade. He stores the coffee in his home and channels wastewater into a designated pit. Temporary workers are hired during harvest, and the farm also grows yuca and plantain. No pest control measures are used other than pruning if required.
