Every coffee harvest comes with challenges for producers and farm employees. Especially when school vacations match harvest seasons. During this time many parents working in coffee are facing a choice between generating income and tak-
ing care of their children. In many cases this challenge is solved by taking the whole family to the farm. To offer a solution, our Sister Company (Peter Schoenfeld) and the non-profit organisation Funcafe, started conducting Coffee Kids Camps. The project proved to be successful in the Huehuetenango region and now expands its opera- tions to the Cubulco and Santa Rosa region. This year’s Golden Flakes of the Jumay crop will help funding the camps.
The aim of this project is to keep children away from any type of labour. The Coffee Kids Camps will provide children with a hot meal and a safe space to learn, while their parents can work on coffee farms. With the support of local teachers, the ed- ucational needs are reinforced towards food nutrition, coffee-oriented content and sustainable agricultural practices. Each Camp is structured as a 35-day program and needs a 4500 USD funding. The amount of our green coffee that supports the project will finance two Coffee Kids Camps.
Our Golden Flakes of Jumay grows on the slopes of the Jumay volcano, in the eastern region of Jalapa in New Oriente. New Oriente is the fourth and one of the most recent coffee region of Guatemala. The combination of rich soil, high-altitude and rainy climate is perfect for coffee trees. Smallholders dominate the coffee growing industry, shadowing the big old estates. Pro- ducers cultivate coffee amongst other crops, and sell the cherries or parch- ments.
Golden Flakes of Jumay is an exclusive coffee from our sister company in Guatemala, Peter Schoenfeld. To create the coffee, they work with small producers from the Jalapa, Mataquescuintla and San Carlos Alzatate areas. Their selection is not only based on the geography but on the quality of the cherries and the cup profile. This strategy allows for a stable and consistent coffee – year after year.
