Ethiopia KAFA FOREST Coffee Kafa is the area situated in the southwestern part of Ethiopia – a place where Arabica coffee is believed to originate (with the name ‘coffee’ derived from the word ‘kafa’ which is the name of the area / province). Growing altitude ranges from 1400-2100 m.a.s.l. Coffees from there are mainly marketed as forest coffee due to the nature of the environment where coffee is found grown in deep forest with little or no intervention of human being – it is mostly wild grown. Preparation is mainly natural processed – with few cooperatives nowadays producing wet processed coffees (like the Kuti, Diri, Michiti, Wodiyo coops from the Kafa union). Based on data from the ministry of agriculture, average production of Kafa coffee is around 12,000 tons.
